Following are the main programs contained in the 5th 3-Year Plan (1994 through 1996) currently underway.
(a) Construction of the second Bangkok international airport
In view of a significant growth of the international airline business, the second Bangkok international airport is planned. The candidate site of construction of 3,200 hectares is located 30 km east of the city center. 4 runaways of 4000m long are planned for the future airport that will handle 100 million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargoes a year.
Completion is scheduled in the year 2000, and to solve the biggest issue of access to the airport, a new transportation system is considered in addition to an extension of the currently available SRT services.
(b) Refurbishing of existing airport facilities
In order to solidify the prestige of Bangkok airport as a hub airport in Southeast Asia, it is planned to expand the terminal building for the international and domestic passengers, as well as the parking lot and the aprons.
